The four main party leaders were asked to lay out policy priorities during the French language election debate on Friday – but the conversation quickly turned to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The leaders began Wednesday’s debate by sparring over how to respond to the U.S.-Canada trade, and pitching themselves as the best person to negotiate with Trump.
Conservative Party Leader Poilievre said he would open negotatiations with the U.S. president on his first day in office, while Liberal Party Leader said Canada must plan for the worst-case scenario and build a stronger economy.
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said Canada needs to align with countries impacted by U.S. tariffs and “negotiate rationally.” Meanwhile, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Canada should prioritize what matters most and invest rather than cut.
