8th of May marks 100 years of the Afrikaans language
The eighth of May marks 100 years of the Afrikaans language being an official language.It has a chequered history and was once seen as the language of the oppressor, under the apartheid regime.
This led to young people revolting in 1976 against the then government’s plans to impose Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools for black students. Many years later, an expert says the language has evolved, and in line with the vision of a multi-lingual democratic South Africa, joins the ranks of other indigenous languages that must be developed and promoted.
