Afrikaans marks 100 years
Concerns over the future of South African indigenous languages have been raised at the centenary of the Afrikaans language. Afrikaans was recognised as an official language on May 8th, 1925 and is the third most spoken language in the country, after Zulu and Xhosa. According to Stats SA Census 2011, 13.5% of the country’s total population speak Afrikaans as a first language.
