Afrikaans marks 100 years as the official language
On the 8th of May 1925, Afrikaans became the country’s second official language alongside English. It replaced Dutch which had been one of the two official languages in the then Union of South Africa. 2025 marks the centenary of Afrikaans’ elevated position. However, the story of the origins of the language goes much deeper and further back than the past 100 years.
