ANC stalwart Gertrude Shope dies aged 99
Anti-apartheid activist and former president of ANC Women’s League, Gertrude Shope has passed away.
Shope dedicated her life to the struggle against apartheid, workers’ rights and gender equality. She served as a leader Umkhonto We Sizwe for many years while living in exile and was one of the ANC’s first Chief Representatives.
She was also one of the first women to serve on the National Executive Council, following Florence Mophosho.
She was elected to the presidency of ANCWL in 1991 and in 1994 she became a member of the first democratic parliament.
The ANC says Ma Shope passed away peacefully at her home earlier today aged 99.
The party has extended its condolences to her family, comrades, the ANC Women’s League and the broader party alliance.
