Barberton mineworkers aggrieved over retrenchments
Barberton Mine has retrenched 244 mineworkers at New Consort, Fairview, and Shabe Mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga. The mine initially wanted to retrenched over 900 workers, but after negotiations between mine management and unions, the number was reduced.
Some workers were redeployed to other positions, and some took voluntary severance packages.
The retrenched workers claim the process was not fair, as many who were retrenched have been working for years. Those who were employed recently were not retrenched.
