Battle of Okinawa survivors watch current emergency preparations with mixed feelings
Okinawa in Japan is known as a beautiful resort. However, 80 years ago, at the end of the Pacific War, Okinawa became the stage for a fierce ground battle. The US military attacked with overwhelming force to secure Okinawa as a base for the invasion of mainland Japan. The Japanese military positioned Okinawa as a bulwark for the defense of the mainland, and in order to delay the US military’s landing on the mainland by even a single day, they adopted a strategy of hiding in shelters and engaging in a long-term war of attrition. Amidst this, the tragedy of mass suicide occurred. We will take a fresh look back at this.
