Burn injuries are among the most significant causes of deaths in children in South Africa, and in particular those aged 5 years and younger. The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, with the Children’s Hospital Trust and Child Safe South Africa, urge all caregivers, parents and communities to take action to prevent burns with the onset of winter. The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital Burns Unit says more than 80% of its admissions in 2024 year was a a result of hot liquids.
