Islamist gangs are exploiting weak oversight in UK prisons, using intimidation and violence to assert control. A recent attack at HMP Frankland by Hashem Abedi, brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, exposed major failures in managing extremist inmates.
Separation centres meant to isolate radical prisoners are underused and, at times, counterproductive, sometimes housing vulnerable inmates rather than the actual threats.
Inside some prisons, gangs have created “Sharia courts” and enforce their own rules, while staff fear accusations of racism if they push back.
Calls for reform include stronger leadership, better staff training, and mental health support. Without change, prison control risks slipping further into criminal hands.
