Concerns over Older Persons Amendment Bill
Police have raised concerns of the added administrative strain that could accompany the implementation of the Older Persons Amendment Bill.
The Bill is aimed at enhancing the well-being and protection of elderly people.
It also focuses on improving service standards, addressing abuse, and providing temporary safe care.
Appearing before Parliament’s Social Development portfolio committee last week, police raised issues about the removal of older persons to temporary safe care and the responsibilities of police officers in such instances.
This Bill was revived by the National Council of Provinces in December last year.
It had been processed by the sixth democratic Parliament, but lapsed at the end of that parliamentary term.
