Dairy farmers future-proofing herds by breeding heat-tolerant cattle | ABC NEWS
A NSW dairy farmer is urging others to future-proof their herds by breeding heat-tolerant cattle using a world-first Aussie invention.
Fourth-generation farmer Trevor Parrish was among the first to sign up to use the Heat Tolerance ABV — a tool developed by Melbourne scientist Dr Thuy Nguyen that uses simple genetic samples to identify animals better suited to hot conditions.
“To me it made a lot of sense to have a look into it and try and use bulls that were [more] heat tolerant so it would help the next generation moving forward,” Mr Parrish said.
With climate change driving up temperatures, Dr Nguyen says the tool benefits both animal welfare and farmers’ bottom lines.
“Farmers have already done a lot to help cows cool during hot days… But adding genetics on top of all that is significant,” Dr Nguyen said
The ABV test requires a quick genetic sample, such as a tuft of hair, which is then posted to Dr Nguyen and her team at DataGene — an independent and industry-owned organisation.
