Data analysis from the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism has revealed that the number of HIV-positive South Africans over the age of 50 has more than doubled in the last decade – from around 700 000 in 2015 to 1.85 million in 2025. They now form the second largest group of HIV-positive people in the country, up from being the smallest group 20 years ago. What impact will this have on the health system?
