Discussion | Omotoso deported, barred from SA for five years: Mpumelelo Zikalala
Televangelist Timothy Omotoso has officially left South Africa on a flight to Lagos.
He voluntarily opted to be deported following his re-arrest on the 10th of May by immigration authorities in East London.
He arrived at the O.R Tambo International airport just after midday on a flight from King Shaka in Durban.
He was then escorted by police from the domestic arrivals terminal to the International departures terminal, where he waited to board the plane.
Omotoso is expected to arrive in Lagos at half past eight tonight.
The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that he will not be allowed back in the country for the next five years.
Omotoso was arrested in 2017 and faced a near decade long trial on charges of rape, racketeering and human trafficking.
He was acquitted on all 32 charges on 2 April this year and released from prison.
And, for a legal perspective of what his departure will mean going forward, following the NPA’s decision to appeal his acquittal, we are now joined for more by Legal Analyst Mpumelelo Zikalala.
