The Russian occupier, having returned from the front without a leg, abruptly changed his attitude towards the so-called “SVO”. With tears in his eyes, he called on Russians not to participate in the aggression.
A Russian soldier complained that without a leg he became completely helpless and no one needed him.
” I’m completely helpless! I’m sitting here, in short. They let me out of the hospital, out of the unit, for the weekend. I can’t do anything. What a stump. I sleep, I eat, I sleep, I eat… This is my weekend. Don’t join the army, please. Don’t go… This helplessness is killing me… Sorry for being so frank, but I can’t even go to the toilet normally… I can’t even put out a cigarette normally! ” – the occupier said.
There are at least 300,000 severely injured veterans, according to calculations by the independent Russian media outlets Mediazona and Meduza, as well as the BBC, which all use open source statistics to calculate the war’s toll of deaths and injuries. Since 2023, the authorities have made it more difficult to estimate the number of severely injured because they have designated so many statistics as classified, journalists said. At present, there are not enough professionals with the training to treat veterans or to provide regular consultations for them.
Recall, Russian military is redeploying wounded soldiers to the front lines in Ukraine by force before they can complete medical treatment. Russia has faced heavy casualties since invading Ukraine in February 2022, and soldiers injured in battle are entitled to state benefits including financial compensation.
Officials say close to 98% of wounded Russian soldiers return to combat after undergoing medical treatment. Frontline footage posted by Ukrainian drone operators and Russian troops show men who have clearly suffered leg injuries, some still bandaged, using crutches in combat areas, in several instances targeted by Ukrainian drones as they use the walking aids to try to flee. The use of wounded soldiers is a sign that Moscow is managing its growing manpower issues without a wider, general mobilisation, which would be unpopular among Russia’s urban middle classes. A Ukrainian defense intelligence official said they had noticed the trend in wounded Russian soldiers appearing in “active combat areas” over the last six months. He attributed the use of the wounded as a bid by commanders to hide losses and their inability to get troops in and out of combat areas when needed.
