England experiences driest start to spring in 69 years
England experienced the driest start to spring since 1956 due to below-average rainfall and the sunniest April on record. Water companies are scrambling to save water as the Environment Agency warns of a “medium” risk of drought this summer. While hosepipe bans are not currently planned, the agency said curbs could be introduced in the coming months if dry conditions continue. The warning comes ahead of a meeting of the government’s national drought group.
