Parliament rushed through emergency laws on 12 April 2025 to stop British Steel’s collapse, threatening criminal penalties for executives if operations are shut down.
MPs and peers were recalled for a rare Saturday sitting after PM Keir Starmer and ministers agreed urgent powers were needed to keep the Scunthorpe plant running and save thousands of jobs.
Talks with British Steel’s Chinese owner, Jingye, had broken down. Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said Jingye planned to stop buying raw materials, effectively shutting down the UK’s last blast furnaces.
