First day of early voting sees record numbers cast their ballot ahead of federal election
According to the Australian Electoral Commission more than 542,000 votes were cast on the first day of early voting on Tuesday as the federal election nears.
This beats the 2022 record of more than 314,000 on day one of early voting.
Pre-polling opened on Tuesday, April 22, less than two weeks out from the federal election on Saturday, May 3.
