Former Nationals MP weighs in on Matt Canavan's leadership bid
Former Howard Government Minister Peter McGauran has weighed in on Queensland Senator Matt Canavan’s bid to lead the Nationals.
Mr Canavan on Friday confirmed he will vie for Nationals leader when the party room meets on Monday in Canberra amid Jacinta Price’s defection to the Liberals.
Speaking to Sky News Australia, Mr McGauran acknowledged the Queensland Senator’s popularity among the party’s conservative base but argued that his position as a senator poses as a bit of a hurdle.
“Matt Canavan has a very strong following, but it’s relatively defined as the conservative base,” Mr McGauran said.
“His problem is he’s a senator… it would be unprecedented. So I can’t see Matt Canavan getting up for that reason alone.
“I think you can call that one for David Littleproud.”
