Francis Prevost elected as first American Pope
The Catholic Conclave of Cardinals has elected Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost as the first American Pope.
Prevost will be known as Pope Leo the 14th.
His historic election follows the death of Pope Francis on April 21st at the age of 88.
Pope Leo is almost 20 years younger at just 69 and has received congratulation from leaders around the world, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, who called the election of Pope Leo XIV a profound moment for the Catholic Church as well as the global community.
Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports that US President Donald Trump was one of the first leaders to weigh in on the election of the new Pontiff.
