Freedom Day | 40 year anniversary of the Trojan Horse Massacre
The Freedom Day holiday is being observed today. It marks 31 years since South Africans went to the polls for the first time.
Acting President Gwede Mantashe used the official Freedom Day address yesterday to call for unity among different races in the country.
Mantashe was speaking in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, at the official commemorative event.
This after he was announced as Acting President due to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ill health.
Mantashe urged the people of South Africa to reject racial divisions as the country celebrated 31 years of democracy.
Meanwhile, this year also marks 40 years since the Trojan Horse Massacre occurred, at Belgravia, in Athlone, Cape Town, where three students died and several others were injured.
Countless youths paid the ultimate price in the fight against Apartheid and the struggle for freedom in Cape Town during the student protests in the 1980s.
Some names are well known, while many others have not been honoured for their sacrifices
