Global National: April 20, 2025 | Carney attends Ottawa rally after Easter service, vows to up trade
It’s crunch time on the federal campaign trail, and as Canadians weigh their options this holiday weekend, Liberal leader Mark Carney hit the road to sell his fully costed platform. A devout Catholic, Carney took the morning off to attend Easter Sunday service. In the afternoon, he vowed at a Liberal rally in Ottawa to increase trade everywhere – except the U.S.
Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre once again took aim at Carney’s recently released platform Sunday. At a campaign stop in B.C. Poilievre claimed a Liberal plan for $130 billion in spending and tax cuts would worsen deficits, fuel inflation and make life more expensive for Canadians overall. However, the Tories are yet to release their own platform. Poilievre says it’s coming “soon.” Global’s Richard Zussman sat down with Poilievre for some insight into what he’s promised so far.
Overseas, thousands gathered at the Vatican for the annual Easter Sunday service and to pray for the continued recovery of Pope Francis. The 88-year-old wasn’t at the mass but gave a brief speech afterwards at St. Peter’s Square. The pontiff was discharged from hospital nearly a month ago after being bedridden with double pneumonia.
And, in the sports world, Canada got off on the right foot Saturday night, with the Winnipeg Jets soaring over the St. Louis Blues, winning the first game of the NHL playoffs. Canada has a guaranteed win Sunday night with the highly anticipated battle of Ontario – the Toronto Maple Leafs are going head-to-head with longtime rivals, the Ottawa Senators, at Scotiabank Arena.
