Global National: April 27, 2025 | 11 dead, dozens injured in Vancouver mass casualty event
Messages of condolence are pouring in from across the country and around the world following a mass casualty event in Vancouver Saturday night. Police now say 11 people are dead, ranging in age from five to 65, after the driver of an SUV crashed through a crowd at a Filipino street festival. Many more victims are in hospital. A suspect is in custody, and authorities don’t believe it was an act of terrorism. Neetu Garcha has more.
Liberal Leader Mark Carney assumed the role of prime minister for a short time Sunday morning. among the world leaders reacting to the tragedy in Vancouver. Carney was supposed to lead a last second air raid of six different cities where Liberals think they can pick up seats, but the Vancouver festival tragedy forced a change in plans. Mackenzie Gray has more.
The Conservatives are facing questions and criticism for reposting a social media video that links the Vancouver Lapu Lapu tragedy to the Liberal approach to crime. This, even after police revealed that the suspect’s mental health was an aggravating factor. The person who made the initial video removed the reference to the tragedy in Vancouver, but as Touria Izri reports, the Conservatives are not responding to questions about the post.
The death toll has risen in Iran following a massive explosion in a southern port city. It happened while Iran and the United States were engaged in nuclear negotiations in Oman. While the two incidents have not been linked, as Candice Cole reports, Iranian authorities have raised concerns.
