Prime Minister Mark Carney is on his first overseas trip since being elected. He held crucial meetings with world leaders in Rome on Saturday ahead of Pope Leo’s inauguration. But with Russia’s war on Ukraine raging on and continuing threats from the U.S. president, the event is seen as a prime opportunity to strengthen international alliances. Global’s Mackenzie Gray is travelling with the Prime Minister and has the top story tonight.
Ceasefire talks resumed in Qatar on Saturday as Pope Leo called for peace in Gaza. Despite this, Israel has escalated its bombardment, killing more than 300 people since Thursday. Israel also launched the first phase of a ground assault, mobilizing its military to seize “strategic areas of Gaza” and eliminate Hamas. As Nathaniel Dove reports, there are fears Israel could be planning a larger-scale invasion.
Negotiators failed to reach a deal on a “permanent ceasefire” in Ukraine as deadly Russian drone strikes continued Saturday morning. Drones have become a central weapon in the war. Two Canadian men with experience in Ukraine are looking to support the fight in the skies. Global’s Dan Spector reports.
Major League Baseball made a historic policy change this week by reinstating deceased players who were banned from the league.
