“Grave Injustice” | Grooming Gang Received £600K Of Taxpayer Money For Legal Aid
Seven men jailed in 2018 for grooming and abusing girls in Rotherham received a total of £611,204 in legal aid.
Ringleader Mohammed Imran Ali Akhtar, jailed for 23 years, got nearly £144,000 – excluding costs from a later trial where he was sentenced to another 12 years for raping a 13-year-old.
The others received between £60,000 and £99,000 each, with one man granted nearly £91,000. All but one were convicted of rape.
The news comes as the Government faces backlash for scaling back planned grooming gang inquiries, redirecting funds to other projects. Critics, including Sir Trevor Phillips, called the move “shameful.”
The Legal Aid Agency stressed the money went to lawyers to ensure fair trials, not to the offenders themselves.
