Commons leader Lucy Powell is facing calls to quit after dismissing grooming gang concerns as “dog whistle” politics during a BBC Radio 4 debate.
She interrupted Reform UK’s Tim Montgomerie, saying: “Oh, we want to blow that little trumpet now, do we?” sparking backlash and claims she belittled the issue.
Critics noted Labour has blocked a national inquiry and dropped five local ones. Powell later apologised on X, saying she didn’t mean to downplay the issue.
