However, after Ukrainian counterattacks in the fall of 2022, not only did Russia commit more adequate resources to the war, but gave them operational aims that suited their capabilities.<br /><br />After failing to rapidly seize key targets near Kyiv in the face of stubborn resistance, the Russian military has shifted to a considerably more methodical approach that has played to traditional strengths, mitigating weaknesses in co-ordination in a more fluid environment. <br /><br />Military expert Mykhailo Zhyrokhov told that while little attention is given to the southern front, Ukraine's Armed Forces have had some small successes there.<br /><br />"The situation in the south is that the Russians considered this part of the front quiet, so they moved most of their forces away and redeployed them to the Pokrovsk and Kupyansk directions. Our command took advantage of this," Zhyrokhov said. “They are gradually withdrawing from the UAV gray zone and improving their positions, but there is no indication of a large-scale offensive. They are simply pressuring Russian forces and moving to better-protected, more advantageous positions.
