Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to officially commence his role as Member of Parliament for Nepean on Thursday, following his recent swearing-in as prime minister after winning the Liberal leadership.
The riding had been held by Chandra Arya since 2015, but he was disqualified by the party from running for re-election this year shortly after he was dismissed as a candidate in the Liberal leadership race.
The formal ceremony will take place in the West Block, where Carney will pledge allegiance to King Charles III before signing the parliamentary roll.
This event precedes the King’s opening of Parliament later this month, marking the first time a sovereign will inaugurate a new Parliament in Canada since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1957.
