Matt Canavan’s leadership tilt questioned
Former Labor adviser Bruce Hawker has weighed in on Matt Canavan’s bid to challenge David Littleproud for the leadership of the Nationals following the Coalition’s federal election defeat.
The Queensland Senator confirmed he will vie for Nationals leader when the party room meets on Monday in Canberra amid Jacinta Price’s defection to the Liberals.
“He’s very conservative, he’s a bit of a disruptor. Again, somebody who probably isn’t reading the room particularly well when it comes to where the Australian public is right now,” Mr Hawker told Sky News Australia.
“I think if I were the National party, I’d be trying to settle things down a bit, looking to get in touch with their own electors who obviously have some concerns as well.
“They have to be looking all the time at their own base just like the other parties do too … if I were them, I think I’d probably stick with Littleproud.”
