Moving iPhone production to the US would make them “beyond affordable,” expert says
Reshoring manufacturing of iPhones to the U.S. would make the smartphones “beyond affordable,” one technology analyst tells Global News.
“Even if these factories do end up being built in the U.S., it will result in a cost structure that’s so high that not even Apple will be able to absorb it. You and I would likely be paying two to three times as much for an iPhone,” technology analyst and journalist Carmi Levy says.
His comments come after U.S. President Donald Trump promised a 25 per cent tariff on smartphones not made in the U.S., singling out Apple and Samsung.
Levy says the U.S. could not produce iPhones and other tech products on the scale they are made in China, adding that the U.S. workforce is less productive and that labour costs are higher.
