Police are investigating after Southport killer Axel Rudakubana threw boiling water on a prison officer.
The officer was treated in hospital and released the same day.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about prison staff safety, following a similar incident involving Manchester Arena bomber Hashem Abedi. Assaults on prison staff in England and Wales are now at their highest in a decade.
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced taser trials and a review of body armour in response.
Rudakubana, 18, is serving a minimum 52-year sentence for killing three children and attempting to murder several others at a dance class in 2024. A public inquiry into the Southport murders is ongoing.
