Nationals leader announces Coalition split | ABC NEWS
The National Party is splitting from the Liberal Party, officially ending the Coalition.
In making the announcement in Canberra, the Nationals Leader David Littleproud said the two parties had been negotiating on a range of policies including nuclear power, the net zero emissions goal and setting up a Regional Australia Future Fund, but couldn’t reach an agreement.
The split from the Liberal Party means the Nationals will sit alone in parliament, and senior Nationals members will not receive the extra pay that comes with serving as shadow ministers.
The Liberals and Nationals have been in coalition together for more than 80 years, and the announcement of the end of their relationship comes a week after the Liberal Party elected a new leader, Sussan Ley.
At the federal election three weeks ago, the Nationals held onto their lower house seats, while the Liberals lost more than a dozen seats, mostly to the Labor Party.
