Russian Z-publics are publishing a video which, as they claim, shows an attempt by the Estonian Navy, with the support of NATO aircraft, to storm a tanker from the so-called shadow fleet of Russia, with the help of which the Kremlin exports its oil in circumvention of sanctions.
The vessel in question was the Jaguar, sailing under the Gabon flag to the port of Primorsk. The tanker was in the neutral waters of the Gulf of Finland and had a Russian crew on board.
Estonian forces, including the boats Raiu and Kurvits, a landing helicopter and a PZL M28 aircraft, allegedly attempted to force the tanker to change course and enter Estonian territorial waters, where it could be detained. Polish MiG-29 fighters also participated in the operation. “This is how they meet us with helicopters, demanding that we drop anchor ,” one of the tanker crew members comments on the video. According to Russian publics, the ship’s crew refused to obey, despite the threat of ramming and attempts to land troops. At some point, a Russian Su-35 fighter arrived in the area of the incident, after which the allied operation against the tanker allegedly ceased.
Estonia later accused Russia of violating its airspace, Delfi reports . According to Tallinn, the Su-35 illegally entered the country’s airspace in the area of the Juminda Peninsula, was over Estonian territory for less than a minute, and flew without a transponder on and did not communicate with air traffic controllers. F-16 fighters of the Portuguese Air Force, stationed at the Amari base as part of the NATO mission, were sent to intercept. The Estonian Foreign Ministry protested to Moscow, summoning Russia’s Chargé d’Affaires Lenar Salimullin. The Estonian side described the incident as a “serious and unacceptable incident.” The Russian Federation, in turn, is silent about the incident.
Earlier, media reported that in April, Estonia detained the tanker Kiwala, which is part of the Russian “shadow fleet”. The vessel was boarded as soon as it entered Estonian waters in the Gulf of Finland.
According to Estonian authorities, the detention of the tanker is not related to damage to any critical infrastructure at sea. There are several reasons for the ship’s arrest. Firstly, the ship is on the EU sanctions list, and secondly, it was sailing without a national flag, which is prohibited by shipping regulations. ” We detained him to check his documents and legal status ,” said Estonian Navy Commander Ivo Värk.
