No tips, please: Nova Scotia restaurant bans tipping, raises pay of staff to compensate
In a first for Halifax and Nova Scotia, the Bonfire Restaurant will not accept tips from patrons. It’s a model the owners feel is more equitable, by paying their staff $20 an hour, as well as profit sharing.
“We have done away with tips because we don’t believe that our customers should have to subsidize the wages of our employees. That’s kind of the base level of what we’re doing,” says Vincent Morley, one of the co-owners of The Bonfire restaurant in Halifax.
For those in the industry, they’re excited to see whether this model takes hold elsewhere.
Global’s Angela Capobianco reports.
