NPA to appeal Omotoso case ruling: Adv. Mpilonhle Baloyi and GBV activist Caroline Peter weigh in
National Prosecuting Authority head Shamila Batohi has described the acquittal of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso as a major setback for South Africa’s justice system.
The NPA is appealing the not guilty verdict, which came despite over 60 charges of human trafficking, rape, and sexual assault.
This is what she had to say.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs is trying to have Omotoso deported after his arrest on immigration charges over the weekend. But the East London Regional Court released him, citing a procedural flaw, saying proper procedures were not followed.
To help us unpack the legal and social implications of this complex case, we’re joined by legal analyst Adv. Mpilonhle Baloyi and GBV activist Caroline Peter.
