Education Minister Defends Controversial JTC Bill
Amid pushback from the opposition, Education Minister Senator Dana Morris Dixon is defending the newly passed Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC) Bill. Critics have argued that the legislation could increase pressure on teachers and was rushed through without adequate consultation.
Minister Morris Dixon refuted these claims during a post-Cabinet briefing, stating that significant stakeholder engagement occurred prior to the bill’s approval. She affirmed that the bill aims to professionalize the teaching workforce, not burden it.
However, the PNP remains unconvinced. Opposition voices suggest that the bill could lead to higher levels of teacher migration, as educators feel increasingly unsupported by the state. Adrian Williams reports more on the opposition’s stance.
