Pope Francis buried: What next?
While Pope Francis’ funeral mass and burial may have been held today, the masses for the repose of the late Pope’s soul will continue for the next eight days in a tradition called Novemdiales.
Novemdiales is a nine-day period of mourning which in Pope Francis’ case enters its second day tomorrow with an 11.30am Mass of Divine Mercy at St. Peter’s square. Thereafter, masses will be held in St. Peter’s Basilica every 6pm until Sunday, May the 4th.
The Cardinals present in Rome set the schedule for which of them will celebrate each Mass. While these Eucharistic celebrations are open to everyone, each day a different group is scheduled to participate based on their connection with the Holy Father. It is has not yet been announced when the cardinals will assemble to elect Pope Francis’ successor in a conclave.
