Senior devastated after woman asks for hug, steals her necklace gifted by late husband
The family of an East Vancouver woman is speaking out to warn others about a type of theft targeting seniors.
“[The perpetrator said] she was really sad and she just wanted a hug for Mother’s Day and stuff like that,” the victim’s grandson Farhan Hamid said.
The woman slips a ring on the grandmother’s finger and later puts a necklace over her head. Despite the grandmother continued objections, the woman then goes in for a hug and that’s when she slips off the grandmother necklace and replaces it with another.
“[My grandma] was really sad and crying and stuff because it was the last gift my grandpa gave her,” he added.
As Grace Ke reports, it’s just one of several similar distraction thefts reported to police this week alone.
