Sir Keir Starmer announces new immigration rules in bid to 'take back control' | ITV News
Sir Keir Starmer has said the UK risks becoming an “island of strangers” without tougher immigration rules, as he vowed to “tighten up” all elements of the system.
Unveiling a series of stricter visa requirements as part of the immigration white paper, the Prime Minister announced plans to extend the pathway to citizenship to a decade, cut overseas care workers and increase English language requirements.
In a Downing Street speech on Monday, Starmer insisted Labour will “take back control of our borders” and close the page on a “squalid chapter” for politics and the economy.
The PM added that “enforcement will be tougher than ever” and that he wants to see net migration fall “significantly” by the end of Parliament.
