The Week Ahead | NSFAS Accommodation woes
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has failed to keep its commitment to pay all landlords renting out accommodation to students, despite having pleaded with landlords not to evict the students whose accommodation fees have not been paid.
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, OUTA has been warning NSFAS since 2023 that they are sitting on a student accommodation time bomb, calling for the issue should be urgently addressed. Most recently, the Department of Higher Education and Training established a steering committee to assess accommodation challenges across all institutions of higher learning throughout the country.
This assessment follows the fatal shooting of a student killed during a demonstration against the deplorable state of accommodation at the Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus recently last week. The student Sisonke Mbolekwa got laid to rest in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape yesterday.
To take this conversation further we are joined in studio by Kagisho Mamabolo who is a Landlord and we also talk to Asive Dlanjwa, South African Union of Students spokesperson and on the line is Rudie Heyneke, senior project manager at OUTA and lead investigator into NSFAS alleged corruption
