Trump plans to meet new Pope after claiming Vatican has 'already spoken to us'
President Donald Trump has congratulated Pope Leo XIV — the first American to lead the Catholic Church — calling it “a great honour”.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he was “very happy” and “a little bit surprised” by the historic election.
Asked if he plans to meet the new pontiff, Trump confirmed the Vatican has already reached out and said, “We’ll see what happens”.
”They (Vatican) have already spoken to us and we’ll see what happens. But again, to have the pope from the United States of America, that’s a great honour,” he said.
Pope Leo, formerly US Cardinal Robert Prevost from Chicago, is 69 and spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru. He became a cardinal in 2023.
