Trump says white South Africans facing “genocide” as 1st wave of refugees arrive in US
U.S. President Donald Trump will welcome a wave of 49 white South African refugees Monday afternoon. This comes after the Republican leader blocked admission of mostly non-white refugees from the rest of the world – displaced people, fleeing war and famine.
Asked why he’s “creating an expedited path” into the U.S. for white South African refugees specifically, Trump told reporters that the Afrikaners – South African descendants of Dutch settlers – are facing “genocide.”
“They happen to be white. But whether they’re white or black makes no difference to me,” Trump said. “But white farmers are being brutally killed, and their land is being confiscated in South Africa.”
Taking in Afrikaners as refugees fleeing “oppression” has drawn controversy from South African authorities who say Trump has stepped into a domestic issue he simply does not understand.
