Tyre Nichols death: 3 ex-Memphis police officers acquitted on state charges
Three former Memphis police officers were acquitted Wednesday of all state charges, including second-degree murder, in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols after he ran away from a traffic stop.
An out-of-town jury from a majority-white county found Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith not guilty on all charges.
The three ex-officers still face the prospect of years in prison after being convicted in 2024 of some federal charges.
Nichols fled a 2023 traffic stop after he was pulled from his car, pepper-sprayed and hit with a Taser. Five officers chased him down and fatally beat him.
