Ukraine has found a weak spot in Russia’s transport system: several drones over Moscow have caused a transport collapse at the country’s largest airports. Thousands of passengers remain stranded, hundreds of flights have been cancelled, and aviation, one of Russia’s key transport bridges, has been paralyzed, Russian media report . But the worst thing for the Russian Federation is that the aviation collapse in Moscow continues: since May 6, Moscow airports have delayed and cancelled more than 350 flights, affecting over 60 thousand passengers. The reason was the restriction of airspace due to the threat of drones. In recent hours, Ukraine has not launched drones, but the chaos remains.
Moscow is Russia’s largest aviation hub. Given the vast distances within the country, aviation plays a key role in transport links. But just a few Ukrainian drones in the skies above the capital were powerful enough to paralyze traffic at its largest airports. Since May 6, the problems have affected Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo. As of the morning of May 8, 103 departure and arrival flights were delayed. In total, the changes affected more than 350 flights and about 60 thousand passengers. Some people have not been able to fly for the second day.
Every hour of downtime at Moscow airports costs the Russian economy billions in losses. The disruption of logistics chains, flight cancellations and blocking of passenger traffic have a negative impact on the tourism sector, international trade and domestic traffic, exacerbating the economic crisis.
Amid the collapse, the largest Turkish air carriers Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines cancelled all flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Association of Tour Operators of Russia calculated that these cancellations will affect more than 15 thousand passengers who were planning to fly abroad.
For two days, people are forced to sit at the gate, sleep on the floor, and eat at exorbitant prices, not knowing when they will be able to fly out. The same flight can be rescheduled three or four times, and then cancelled altogether. There is no information about departures, airline representatives do not show up, there is only one employee at the counters, and the queues are reminiscent of Soviet times, when people stood for hours to buy scarce goods.
Passengers complain about the appalling sanitary conditions: overflowing toilets, stench, dirt underfoot, broken doors. Bottles of water are astronomically priced, as if we were talking about an abandoned warehouse rather than an international air hub. The problems did not pass by high-ranking officials of the presidential administration, who were unable to get into the business lounges: there were no seats. They had to wait in the common area on the floor, like ordinary passengers, facing chaos on an equal basis with everyone else.
The transport collapse in Moscow led to disruptions at other Russian airports: delays and cancellations affected Barnaul, Gorno-Altaisk, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Norilsk, Omsk and Tomsk due to late arrivals of planes from the capital. According to the Ministry of Transport’s forecast, Moscow airports should return to their normal schedule by 18:00 Moscow time, but given the scale of the chaos, a full restoration of operations looks doubtful.
