UN Secretary-General honours Peacekeepers' sacrifice
The UN Secretary-General has laid a wreath in honour of fallen United Nations Peacekeepers who perished while serving as blue helmets since 1948, including 57 military, police and civilian peacekeepers who perished while serving under the UN Flag last year. Among them, South Africa’s Major Johan Christiaan Pieterse, who died when a hand grenade exploded near his sleeping quarters at a MONUSCO base in the Democratic Republic of Congo in July last year.
