In a controversial move, 49 white South African Afrikaners arrived in the United States yesterday to be granted refugee status, claiming racial discrimination as the basis for their application.
US President Donald Trump has expedited their case, asserting that Afrikaner minorities are being targeted and persecuted in South Africa.
The South African government denies these claims, saying the group isn’t facing such persecution and it is scheduled to meet with the Trump administration to discuss the issue.
