US ready to abandon efforts to broker Russia-Ukraine peace deal, Rubio says
The United States will stop trying to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless there are clear signs that a deal can be done, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Rubio is right and “we will take a pass” on trying to resolve the Ukraine war if either Russia or Ukraine makes it too difficult to end the conflict.
“We are going to see if we can get it done. I think we have a really good chance of getting it done and it’s coming to a head right now,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin on Friday said that some progress had already been made in talks about a possible peace settlement to end the war but “there are still many complex discussions ahead,” spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.
