Vancouver festival tragedy: Premier Eby provides update on "senseless" act of violence | FULL
British Columbia Premier David Eby provided an update on Sunday after a man drove an SUV into a crowd of people at the Lapu Lapu Day festival in Vancouver on Saturday night.
Vancouver police confirmed on Sunday morning that 11 people were killed and dozens more injured
at the festival celebrating the B.C. Filipino community.
The premier had been at the event 24 hours earlier with his daughter and shared his grief for the community along side Vancouver-Kensington MLA Mable Elmore.
Eby said at the press conference, “British Columbians are right to be angry. Here’s a community that has done nothing but give has been overlooked. In terms of their contributions to our province, to this city, to this country, is finally having an event where their culture is upheld and celebrated and it’s destroyed by a single individual.”
Interim Chief Const. Steve Rai said the suspect, who remains in custody, approached the festival from East 43rd Street and drove through the crowd.
The driver, a 30-year-old Vancouver resident, was the lone occupant and Rai said evidence does not lead investigators to believe it was an act of terrorism. However, the motive remains unclear.
