Who is Pope Leo? Vancouver Archdiocese official shares Canadian connection to surprising pope pick
The Archdiocese of Vancouver is reacting to news of a newly elected pope on Thursday.
Vancouver Archdiocese official Monseigneur Gregory Smith has insight into the conclave’s choice to pick American-born Cardinal Robert Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV.
Smith says the new pope is a surprising choice, but is a “universal figure” and has connections with Canadian churches, and believes his experience will positively affect the relationship between the Catholic Church and Indigenous communities.
He also says Pope Leo is a “missionary pope” with close connections to Pope Francis. Smith also breaks down what the words Leo shared on the Vatican balcony means for Christians around the world.
